The Timeline of El Manglito & NOS

  • 2002-2005: The founding of NOS.
  • 2005: Initial NOS projects; conflict resolution skills widely used in the Upper Gulf of the Sea of Cortez.
  • 2007: NOS moves main offices to EL Manglito.
  • 2008-2010: NOS becomes well known in El Manglito and has its first exposure to systems learning tools.
  • 2011: Callo de Hacha penshell clam population nears collapse. Only 100,000 of all three penshell species remain.
  • 2012: Pen shell population falls below 66,000; El Manglito fishers establish community surveillance programs to stave off illegal fishing.
  • 2014: Pen shell population grows to over 1 million. This is still lower than expected due to hurricane Odile and the Tunicate fungus invasive species.
  • 2015: Pen shell population surpasses 3 million.
  • 2016: Fishing cooperative OPRE is established with the purpose of completely restoring the Ensenada de la Paz bay and the El Manglito fishing community.
  • 2016: Pen shell population declines to about 2 million due to the Tunicate fungus.
  • 2017: ACHAMAR established, a marketing organization designed to help OPRE reach higher-end customers and gain better sales margins for its products.
  • End of 2017: OPRE receives its first concession from the Mexican Government to re-open the Callo de Hacha pen shell fishery for commercial production.
